New York Learners Permit – How to Apply

In order to get a NY learner permit, you must be at least 16 years old and follow these steps:

Prepare for the NY Permit Test by studying the NY State Driver’s Manual and taking online practice tests. This will help you understand the rules of the road and traffic laws in New York. NY permit test consists of road rules, traffic signs and laws in New York.

Gather the required documents for proof of age, identity, and residence. These documents may include your birth certificate, social security card, and proof of address.

Apply for your permit online or at a DMV office. You can begin the application process online, but you will need to visit a DMV office to complete it and take the NY Permit Test.

Take the NY Permit Test online or at a DMV office. To pass the test, you must answer at least 80% of the overall questions and 50% of the questions about road signs correctly.

After passing the NY Permit  Test, make a reservation to visit a DMV office to show the original copies of your documents, have your photo taken, pay the permit fee, and receive your temporary permit. Your permanent permit will be mailed to you.

With  NY Learner Permit, you will be able to learn to drive with the supervision of a licensed driver who sits next to you in your car. Once you have enough driving experience and pass the road test, you can get your full driver’s license.

Yes, you can take the NY permit test online. You can submit your application and take the test online using a PC or tablet. You must have a webcam enabled and allow the DMV to access it.

How Many Questions in NY Permit Test


The New York permit test comprises 20 multiple-choice questions, and passing requires correctly answering at least 14 questions or 70% of the total.

Missing more than six questions would consider the applicant ineligible for a learner permit at this time.

Among the 20 questions, four minimum questions are to road signs, and the applicant must correctly answer at least two of these in addition to the 14 overall correct answers.

Can I Re-take the NY Permit Test?

It is normal for someone to fail the test on the first attempt. The main reason why students may fail is that they may have test anxiety or be nervous about taking the exam. This can lead to mistakes, even if the student knows the material well.

They are allowed to take the test again at no additional cost. Additionally,  in New York state, there is no limit to the number of times an individual can retake the New York permit test.
